Not sure how old that thread about DeltaChat is, but that app is pretty awesome. I am using it with my own self hosted mail server, and it
works great with that TextNow sim that gives you free data for maps, email, and rideshare apps.

That's the one that sends encrypted blobs via email as a transport?
Sounds like a good way of providing encrypted chat without having to
    invent a back-end.

The blobs are actual PGP BLOCKS. You can even share the generated keys to anyone else who might like to use them in their own email MTA.

Interesting. That's an object lesson in building a tool and not
    re-inventing the wheel.

Never heard of textnow. Sounds like they operate on pushing ads in the

Pretty much. I'm not sure if it's because I've had it a while or what, but I'm not running the app at all, and the SIM still has service. You do have to keep running the app once a week or so to keep your number if you want to do that.. but I don't have it even installed.

My Samsung phone comes with it (or that's what the previous owner installed on it). How can you use textnow without the app? I'm pretty sure calls (and sms) are managed by the app.

I meant I'm using the SIM with the data without the app on the phone. This may not work for everyone, as I got a SIM from a friend who uninstalled the app from his phone and the SIM stopped working a week later.
