I have a few LoRa toys here, but I am out of range of most everything.
For Meshtastic I have a Heltec V3 upstairs with a bigger antenna (still inside) and then a Lilygo T-Deck I keep downstairs.

Most of the time they can only "see" each other, but every now & then someone will have one on an airplane or one of the HAM guys downtown will put a LoRa node on a balloon and for a brief moment both of them spring to life.

When the T-Desk gets a message a the speaker plays an alert and it has a screen & keyboard, so it makes it easier to reply.

Now about a year later, how's the LoRa system working out?

I have a friend just west of the Huntsville area working with LoRa tech. Currently there is a lot of interference at the 915.125 freq. He moved to 921.125 but there is still sporatic interference. He thinks it's the Bizbee tech on the home meters that could be an issue.

He's just trying to communicate with a companion unit about 750m away. But, there is plenty of forest growth inbetween. Communications was pretty good when he first set it up a couple months ago. Now, he's getting more and more interference.

Pretty much exactly the same, just my two nodes who can see each other most times.

Every now & then someone will be taking off or landing at YHM and then
suddenly everything lights up and I can see dozens of nodes for a brief while.

I've brought the T-Deck with me up north and haven't seen anything up there either. If I leave it on while driving through Toronto I see a bunch of nodes, especially around YYZ.

Next time I go up to visit my parents I'll bring the T-Deck. Maybe I'll connect with your friend.

Do you update your nodes to the meshmap system?

His stations are located west of Yearley Rd, south of Axe Lake. But I don't think you will find him. He's been experimenting with both meshtastic and meshcore. Not sure which he settled with. But for his own 2-node system for remote instrumentation monitoring, he's not expecting chat messages. I'm not sure if can monitor mesh/LoRa chat on his phone while he's doing that.

I'm still a bit befuddled with the LoRa/Meshcore/Meshtasic relationship and how it works, and why would one settle with Meshcore vs Meshtastic.

I've not really looked into that or explicitly listed myself.

Other than playing with LoRa directly on a Pi to see if it could be used to transfer FTN packets (it can, but slowly), I've only played with Meshtastic.

I've seen people refer to Meshtastic as "walkie-textie" instead of the "walkie talkie" that people used in the 80s & 90s. LoRa itself is pretty versatile and can be used for a lot, but I've really only dipped my toe in with the occasional text message with a fly-by stranger.
