Does anybody have any idea why that is? And who Alan Smithee would be...?

Alan Smithee is the name they put on films where the director walked away from the project, usually because they've been asked/forced to do things contrary to their vision of the film.

So how far into the project was the movie development when DL walked out, do you know??
Thanks for the heads up. I'd guess there's quite a number of movies that credit "Alan Smithee" as the director....

There's a movie, can't find it now, about an unsuccessful director named
"Alan Smithee" who takes credit for all of the Smithee-attributed films
and gets some measure of success. Hijinks do ensue.
